    12 Weeks before you move 

  • Chose your preferred moving company
  • Sort through basement, attic, loft and garage
  • Resolve what to do with prohibited items
  • Make proper provisions for pets
  • Decide whether or not to take your car

    • 10 weeks before you move

  • Dispose of belongings you are not taking

    • 8 Weeks before you move

  • Prepare your mailing list for change of address
  • Notify banks, savings accounts, credit card companies, magazine subscriptions
  • Round up passports, birth/marriage certificates, and other family documents
  • Check that electrical goods will work in your new home

    • 6 Weeks before you move

  • Separate favorite toys
  • Make sure pet vaccinations are up to date
  • Arrange for mail to be forwarded
  • Decide whether to buy new household goods (check for tax incentives)

    • 4 Weeks before you move

  • Decide which clothes travel with you
  • Start dismantling climbing frames and garden furniture
  • Agree to an insurance value and terms with your mover
  • Make arrangements for connection of services to your new home
  • Return library books
  • Cancel newspaper magazine subscriptions etc.
  • Find new homes for your plants

    • 7 Days before you move

  • Defrost the refrigerator and freezer
  • Plan simple meals for moving day
  • Separate luggage items you need for personal travel
  • Clean garden tools, bicycles and other outdoor equipment
  • Empty tanks of powered tools and mowers
  • Make sure you have enough medication for at least two weeks
  • Ensure you have copies of any necessary prescriptions for use at destination
  • Collect travelers checks and/or local currency
  • Arrange for someone to look after the children on moving day
